While we weren’t surprised by the recent announcement that Albertson’s is looking for buyers nor the news of so many investment types anxiously throwing their hats into the ring of potential buyers, we were happily caught off guard by the fact that Supermarket News noted the United Food & Commerical Workers union’s concern over the lack of communication from the company.
Joe Hansen, president of the UFCS, which represents 110,000 of the grocer’s workers stated in a prepared announcement that “recent announcements by Albertson’s … seem to have been made without appropriate concern for the kind of uncertainty this causes store employees, communities the grocer serves or shareholders.”
Our surprise over this news item shocked us into realizing we are more cynical than we realized. Until reading this, we didn’t see that our resignation was so deep. In other words to NBN’s way of thinking, do any corporations care about its workers and the communities they do business in? Isn’t that depressingly old fashioned in today’s free trade frenzied America?
