Okay so this doesn’t signify a revolutionary change in the way food is processed, but two items in today’s Supermarket News online edition suggest that the interests of agribusiness may be increasingly at odds with the concerns of those actually bring the foods to markets.
Albertson’s announced the introduction all natural antibiotic and growth hormone free ground beef and the food service leader, Compass Group announced an agreement with Smithfield Foods, the world’s biggest pork and hog processor) to reduce the use of antibiotics delivered to Compass. The Compass/Smithfield agreement was created in partnership with Environmental Defense.
This comes after the June announcement by McDonald’s, also created in partnership with Environmental defense creating new standards for poultry vendors use of antibiotics.
