Battle Over Organic Non Food Labels Heads To Court
The Organic Consumer Association and Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps issued a lawsuit attempting to win an injunction against the USDA’s recent attempts to ban disallows any labeling or marketing of products that are certified to comply with the NOP (National Organic Program) standards.
When the rules were created in 2002,non-food manufacturers were encouraged to create products in compliance with the then new NOP rules. At that time attention was focused on manufacturers that unfairly promoted products as organic, that were in fact primarily water based, using hydrosols, most notably, Avalon Organics.
The current reversal of NOP rules represents a real threat to the ongoing creation of organic products as well as a major disruption of business for many manufacturers, who have invest millions in the creation of products and packaging, using organic oils and other ingredients to create ‘true’ organic products.
